Job Stuff 3

This is more or less a newsletter for job seekers like myself.  I try to find good job search strategies, bad job search strategies, pure BS and job related articles every week.  So far I’ve never run short.  Please pass this around. I’m not doing this for any reason other than the desire to help and communicate with other job seekers.  If you have any good links or stories, especially stories please comment.  If you want the story private, just put that in the comment and I will trash it and  not let it post.

Why is everybody moving to Texas?  Simple, NY and the other states in the Northeast have been punishing job creators for decades.  Eventually that’s going to have an impact.

Dear corporate America,
Now I know that, between golf outing and junkets it gets pretty tough, but you have forgotten why you are where you are and what you are supposed to be doing. You seem to have forgotten the difference between a business and social club. Of course, social clubs and making sure you fit into the right crowd is how you’ve managed you lives. That’s not, though how you run a business. Now I understand that the Ivy Covered Snob Factories’ professors left you ill prepared for some realities, but unfortunately you guys have the hot seat now. The buck stops on your desks and what’s piling up there is not going to be pretty. I suppose it was nice just watching those quarterly income statements and playing the games, moving tokens around. But you forgot something really important. You are supposed to be conducting business, not playing around in a social club:

Is Job hopping good?  Or has it become a case of get them before they get you?

Companies need to stop looking for purple squirrel. You guys need to realize that by only trying to hire the currently employed, you are missing a huge talent pool.    There are a lot of us just waiting to get back to work.  Stop flushing us, please.

Realistically the only thing to do is bail.  I wish that I had known that.

It doesn’t work.  You will always have jitters.  No matter how many interviews you’ve had.

Four better ways to answer the stupid question, “Why do you want to work here?”

Look, no company’s special.  Or they are all special, in different ways.  But my decision to apply is based on needs that are really outside the company, IE, I’m either looking for a job or looking for a better job.  In a way, the company should be selling itself to me, not asking me why I want to be part of their team.  Up to the point I’ve walked into the lobby, I really don’t know anything that helps me make a final decision, one way or another.  I can’t comment on the magic, because the magic is not there yet.

Lying doesn’t help anybody.

I get the feeling that the main point of these tests is to make the candidate feel small and weak, not to actually get any real information.  The whole attitude seems to be to treat candidates as mice in mazes.

I mean seriously, the approach to hiring  as time goes on seems to be to punish the applicant as much as possible for wanting to get a job.  And it just seems to go on getting worse.
