When I was working on the sheet metal post, I had forgotten this article in Make Magazine on how to make a spot welder. Having a spot welder is very useful when working with sheet metal and small parts. It’s also a good start project to develop skills that will help you later.
Here’s a more detailed blog post.
He links to a some tutorials.
Here’s another one.
The fun part building your own spot welder is that the tool yo make will probably be as good, if not better as the tools you can buy. All the spot welders I’ve used or seen in various shops have had sort of that unfinished hacked together feel to them even if they had all the badges and manufacturing of a product. None of them really worked very well either, which can be important when you are trying to weld small parts. So I’m going to have to keep and eye out for a microwave being thrown out.
