Job Stuff 31

This is more or less a newsletter for job seekers like myself.  I try to find good job search strategies, bad job search strategies, pure BS and job related articles every week.  So far I’ve never run short.  Please pass this around. I’m not doing this for any reason other than the desire to help and communicate with other job seekers.  If you have any good links or stories, especially stories please comment.  If you want the story private, just put that in the comment and I will trash it and  not let it post.

This is the saddest part of job hunting.  No matter how many times you go through it the rejection still hurts.

And there’s never any real feedback why.

This candidate will more than likely go on glassdoor and social media and that’t probably just the beginning.

Is there anybody who likes ATS?

The Dropbox link isn’t working, but from what I understand, you probably don’t want to use a “catch-all” resume for every job if they’re using an ATS. It has to be fine-tuned for every job, using the posting’s specific language. Also, from what I’ve been reading lately, one common misconception (that I personally believed up until now) was that the best way to get through an ATS was to flood your resume with keywords. Things have changed now though, according to multiple sources I’ve read. It’s still about using the words and phrases from the ad, but not simply repeating them. I found this link very informative. https://psgcnjnewsletter.wordpress.com/2014/04/30/tips-how-to-get-your-resume-past-an-applicant-tracking-system-ats/

And this one:

I know the simple solution is “Don’t apply if they use an ATS”, but that’s a luxury not everyone can afford. It’s especially frustrating when the rules keep changing. Not to mention they’re not clear in the first place: the article I linked to mentions that some ATS systems don’t care about resume length whereas others will cut off after the first page or so… but how are we job seekers supposed to know what’s what? To answer your article’s question, I think the answer is “no”. An ATS, to my understanding, is not capable of understanding the complex job nuances of freelancing and leaves very little room for error or outside thinking. Yet, it’s sometimes the only game in town.
