This is more or less a newsletter for job seekers like myself.  I try to find good job search strategies, bad job search strategies, pure BS and job related articles every week.  So far I’ve never run short.  Please pass this around. I’m not doing this for any reason other than the desire to help and communicate with other job seekers.  If you have any good links or stories, especially stories please comment.  If you want the story private, just put that in the comment and I will trash it and  not let it post.

What is the cost of a bad hire?

It looks to me as if there are couple of false assumptions in this infograph.  1. It chooses an executive as an example thereby magnifying the possible losses.  2. The greater part of the losses are intangibles like team morale and customer dissatisfaction that are impossible to accurately measure.  Perhaps the biggest question isn’t why you hired the wrong person, but how the hiring company drove them away.

You can do this in a couple of hours and it can really define how you structure what you want to say in an interview.  The interesting part is that if you get to an interview 15 minutes or so early, which you should always try to do, you can find out a lot about the company from what they put in the lobby.

I repeat myself, even though I know it’s pointless.  think about treating your job applicants as if they were potential customers.

Simple courtesy goes a long way.  Why is that so hard to understand?

Culture is people. Treat them like people and the culture will great no matter what your office looks like and even if you don’t have all those fancy toys like google and the rest of silicon valley.  Abuse  people and treat them like cattle and even the fanciest toys won’t help you.

The problem is that in order for all the stuff like this to work is that your resume has to be seen.  But all too many corporate ATS’s are designed so that any steps to create a good sales document insure that it won’t be seen.  So the poor candidate is left in the quandary of creating a resume loaded with keywords to the point it’s unusable for it’s intended purpose.

It’s never too late to learn new things.  And how old you are doesn’t mean that you’ve stopped growing.  There people who stop at 22 after graduation and I know people that were still doing engineering in their eighties.

I can code.  I’m relearning electronics.

So essentially, if we are older, we should conceal and obfuscate right off the bat. That’s a good way to build a relationship that has to rely on trust?

Has networking lost it’s moxie.  I get the feeling that because the system is so broken many people who are working are getting networked to death.

They may believe that the system is working and not understand why people keep apparently wasting their time.  Apparently they don’t see that their open positions aren’t being filled either or they are so busy trying to keep their own jobs that they no longer have time for others.  It may not occur to them that networking works both ways.

Millennials  don’t have much job loyalty.

Having come through a school system that teaches them that loyalty is not rewarded and that gaming the system is how you get ahead it’s not much of a surprise.  The fact that they quickly find out that companies are going to treat them like crap probably contributes as well.

I grew up in Greenwich CT.  My family wasn’t rich, but it was impossible to avoid the rich kids.  In my long personal experience with rich kids they are pretty useless.  Glad to see that the tradition is continuing.

Job searching is selling yourself.  That’s sort hard if you don’t have complete confidence in the product.
