Automata

A few years ago, Martin Scorcese released Hugo, a movie about a boy and about making movies:

One of the plot point surrounds an automaton that the boy is trying to repair.  Now I assumed that the automaton was just another computerized movie effect with no reality behind it.  Just another movie fantasy.  I turns out that I was wrong.  The automaton was real and furthermore automata like the one in the movie really existed as masterworks of their creators, seemingly life in the machine, running on cams.  Here’s a bunch of videos I’ve found.
